The NHL is a fast paced hockey league where anything can happen and anyone can win (I know it’s the proline motto, but don’t bet proline – more on this at the bottom of the page). If you are a hockey fan then you love the game and its excitement, but like any good thing it can get better. It gets even more exciting when you bet on NHL games. It’s also nice to be able to tell your buddies that you made some money betting on the game rather than just trying to get them to believe that you actually saw the outcome coming.
Types of NHL Bets
The three main NHL bets are pretty much the same as any other sport. You’ve got the moneyline bet which is betting on which team will win the game outright. Moneyline betting is all I do because the league is so even that the puckline bets get difficult to judge. With puckline betting the favourite must win by 2 goals, while the underdog must either win the game or lose by 1. Over/under betting is also popular and it involves wagering on how many goals will be scored in the game. There are many other NHL betting options such as regulation betting, period betting, futures betting and other prop bets as well.
NHL Betting Tips
Here are a couple general tips that I use to help me profit when I bet on NHL games. It’s important to remember though that every game is different and no one tip will work in every situation.
- Bet The Underdogs – I bet on the underdog about 75% of the time in NHL games. The league is just so close these days that anyone can win on any given night. The public still likes to go with the favourites because people generally like “winning” their bets more than profiting. If I hit a +180 dog 2 out of 5 times I’ve won 0.6 units so I’m happy. Some casual bettors will bet the favourite and win 3 out of 5 times but be down a unit (assuming -200 odds on favourite), but they will still be happy because they won more times than they lost. That’s not to say if you bet the underdog on every game for the rest of the season you will make money. But I’m confident that you would lose less money betting the underdog on every game than betting the favourite.
- Be Patient – There are a lot of NHL games throughout a season and you are more likely to make money if you bet bigger on games that you feel very confident about than betting a little about on every lean that you have. A general rule of thumb I use is trying not to bet on more than 3 or so NHL games a night.
Best Sites To Bet On NHL
The best place to bet on NHL games is online at a reputable sportsbook like any of the ones mentioned above. Canadians should stay away from proline because the payouts are garbage. You can actually make about double betting the exact same parlay online as with proline. Online sportsbooks are also very convenient, safe and the bonuses give you some extra cash for betting on the NHL.
